College wins soccer

The Ruapehu College Soccer team have won the Ruapehu Press League. Player-coach John McCartney was informed of the final placing by secretary of the Tongariro Football Association, Mr Stan Trotter, on Wednesday night. "I'm absolutely delighted with the result... the team thoroughly deserved their success." said Mr McCartney. The result has been in the balance for nearly four weeks, since the draw with the Waiouru Celtics army team. "It all came down to goal difference and I knew it was going to be a close thing. We were never really sure about winning the league." said the coach. Two years ago the College team were runners up in the league, but last year did not enter a team in the league because the available players were not physically competitivq to handle the very tough competition. "It is a good reward for those young players who missed out on their soccer last year" said Mr McCartney. "Soccer at the College is strong again. We have a lot of players with potential

and latent talent. Leini Hakaumotu, Caleb Tumataroa spring to mind, but they are only two members of a very successful team effort."

The league has finished, but there is still a chance for the College to gain more honours in the upcoming knockout competition.
