Vocal trio in on the nightclub act
Chris de Jong, Sheryl Rogers and Barbara Griffin are the three woman vocal line-up with the Hips. The girls met at Marmalade Studios late last year while working on an album by the band "Real Time" of which Sheryl is a member. Just about everybody else in the Hips is borrowed from the Holidaymakers, that is Barbara, Richard and Dave plus Aaron from
Chicago Smokeshop. Another one, Ian, plays with Aaron forming the rhythym section in the Blue Flame Express and Oxygen Stealers and also plays in the Browne Street Band. Two other Hips, Dave and Steve who are ex polytech jazz students.f make up one of the best horn sections in Wellington . The Hips have a repertoire of a wide range of styles from "Boogie
Woogie Bugle Boy" of the 40s to the 70s funk of "Sophisticated Lady", New Zealand favourites like "Tears" and African
gospel "Sin Nje Nje". There's also sing along favourites like "My Boyfriend's Back", "Chapel of Love" and
"Heatwave". They also have five original songs in their current repertoire and a single planned.
