Conservation week now on
The focus of Conservation Week, which is right now, is the natural values of Antarctica, its fragility and uniqueness and importance to New Zealand - its closest neighbour. Two hundred years ago it was an undiscovered land, 30 years ago it was declared an international zone for peaceful, scientific study under the Antarctic Treaty and today it is recognised as a vitally important part of the planet, and the worlds last great wilderness. "Antarctica may seem
too far away from where we live to be the focus of Conservation Week, but it is critical to all of us. Everything we do, the kind of detergents we choose, what we do with our rubbish, looking after trees - affects the planet in some way," said Conservation New Zealand Chairman Colin McLeod. Colin McLeod said the committee chose the theme because of Antarctica's outstanding value as a sensitive monitor of the changes that humans are making to the biosphere.
"Antarctica is vitally important to all of us and there are ways we can all help to protect it by learning about it and talking to other people and by being clear about your own choices and actions" he said. Several events, activities and displays have been organised by various groups in the Taupo District during Conservation Week. Lianne Campbell, Public Awareness Officer for the Department of Conservation has been coordinating a number of
activities and says that many local schools and community groups have become involved in this year's Conservation Week. "The enthusiasm and support the Department has received so far has been really great and we're looking forward to a very successful Conservation Week. I've been especially impressed by the amount of knowledge and concern shown by school children" she said. Conservation Week aims to raise people's awareness of conservation issues, to think about our future, to learn from our mistakes and re-assess values. It is particularly aimed at young people.
