All change at Ruapehu Lions
Ruapehu Lions president for 1989-90, Bob Newton, handed over the reins to new president Doug Bennett recently, thanking fellow Lions for their support.
The changeover night was the club's 24th ahd past president Bob Newton outlined some of the highlights of the year. He said there were a great variety of jobs and projects completed in the community. Over $4500 in donations were made to different education causes, with one Ohakune and one Raetihi teacher being sent to skills for adolescents courses. Books worth more than $2000 were purchased
for Ohakune and books for the Raetihi course are also to be bought. Other projects include help with Blood Bank, Braille collections, Ohakune Primary School playground work, the Toyota Fun Run for the Commonwealth Games, Youth to Everest, the 1990s celebrations and running the annual senior citizens' Christmas dinner and trip. Fundraising projects include the hire of the mini motor bikes, which
had been well-used through the year, and collecting scrap metal (led by Lion Fred Collett). The club is building up its own flock of sheep, managed by a farming committee, which Bob thanked. Noel Bates and Ian Strachan were presented with plaques in appreciation for their efforts at the Tangiwai Memorial Site, and flowers were presented to Mrs Lina McNie who
looks after the club's linen. Special guests at the evening were Mayor Garrick Workman and Zone Chairman Bud Abbot. Mayor Workman was given the proceeds from the night's fine session to pass on to a Waimarino charity. 2nd yr Directors Fred Collett and John Greenwood, 1st yr Dirs Russell England and Graham Moore, tail twister Grant Price, Lion tamer Rodney Winchombe, book keeper Gordon McNie, bulletin editor Bob Newton, farming Laurie Birchall, mini bikes Lou Fetzer, membership chairman Elwin Greenwood, custodian Wally Parkes, greeter Bob Newton, 25th anniversary chairman Ian Strachan.
