Cake without couth

Junction Ski Shop owner Mike Wiggins and friends said goodbye to 40-odd years last week, in a way that some guests found lacking in couth. Rather than the traditional cutting of the birthday cake ritual, his (ex-?) friend Nancy Van der Laan introduced him to an alternative, weight watchers' ritual where one edge of the cake is lifted and quickly manoeuvred forward to be deposited on the outside of the mouth and stomach, rather than the inside where it could tum to fat. An unfortunate side effect of this method of avoiding birthday weight-gain is an 'orrible messy food fight. (If you see Graeme Berry of Turoa Lodge in the next few days - don't mention cream cakes or carpet cleaner, he may explode!).
