College draw battle with Army

The young Ruapehu College side played above themselves to hold Waiouru Celtics to a draw on Sunday in the Ruapehu Press League. College played with the elements in the first half and looked comfortable against a lacklustre army team. College were soon ahead when Duane Dixon showed good skills in the opposition's goal area to take the early chance and the lead. College led 1-0 at half time. Army substitute "Bales" really was the difference between the two sides in the second half. "Bales" displayed his considerable Saturday league experience and strength to really make things happen. His stunning shot in the second half rocked the College onto the back foot. There came a period of desperate defence for the young College team, with "Bales" setting up chance after chance on front of goal. He made the breakthrough midway through the second half to set up Gene for a simple tap-in. College never gave up or lost spirit and were rewarded for their tenacity when Duane Dixon beat the offside trap to blast first against the keeper, then to lob over him for the equaliser. The College keeper kept his side in the race for the league title, late in the game with an unbelievable point - blank save. The defence of Phillip Hawken, Craig Maru and Leini Hakaumotu deserve mention for soaking up so much army pressure. The midfield trio of Avinesh Sharma, Raymond McDougall and Geoff Pitts worked tirelessly throughout the game. Peter Samson was unlucky up front on several occasions for the College, but gave good support for Duane Dixon. Mari of the Match: "Bales." Upcoming Games 8th July: Taumaranui vs Rangipo: Hautu vs Ruapehu College; Cadets vs Celtics.
