Year-round radio coming

Southern Ruapehu listeners may soon have a year-round community radio station following the efforts of the Ruapehu District Council and the Broadcasting Commission. At the same time that the RDC was sounding out the possibility of extending King Country Radio's coverage to include the southern part of the district, the Commission made an announcement that they would subsidise the provision of a radio signal to Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru. The Commission's proposal was that River

City Radio of Wanganui would provide the signal in FM. The Commission would subsidise the broadcast and it would not be dependent on

advertising revenues from the area. Ruapehu general manager Cliff Houston has asked the Broadcasting Commission to Turnpage2

Radio

From page 1 consider giving that subsidy to King Country Radio so that Ruapehu could have a dis-trict-wide radio station. He said one of the keys to district unity is to have uniform methods of communication and that one strategy set out in the Corporate Plan to influence public perception of the council is a commitment to undertake radio talkbacks, which are currently only effective in the Taumarunui area.
