Maungarongo Access trainees Matt Mareikura, Owen Edwards and Eddie Pickery catch a ride across the Lakes Reserve water on the partly finished fishing platform, towed by conservation officer John Heaphy. They were part of a larger group of Access trainees, ied by tutor Eddie Grey, who built the platform with materials from the Department of Conservation. The platform will allow another access point on the northerly side of the lake for children to fish from. Mr Heaphy said the project has been on the drawing board for some time and it was thanks to the offer of help from the trainees that it became possible. He said the Waimarino wildlife conservancy will be restocking the lake with 300 two-year old fish, averaging one kilogram at the end of September. The conservancy releases trout in the iake annually to encourage children to try trout fishing.
