TNZ says no to mountain state highways

Transit New Zealand has rejected the idea of giving the Bruce Road and the Ohakune Mountain Road State Highway status, but have supported the change of the Pipiriki Wanganui River Road status to Special Purpose. The Ruapehu District Council submitted that the changes be made and the final decisions are to be rriade by the TNZ board in August. TNZ have also said that having two state highways running parallel in close proximity such as State Highway 49 and 49A does not fit policy. SH 49A appears to be oriented towards local traffic and so may soon lose its state highway designatioh, said TNZ.
