Police on skis this season
Turoa has its own police station this year, complete with a ski equipped constable. The Waimarino Police are using the Department of Conservation station at the Turoa Carpark' as a base, to be manned by Constable Greg Phillips. Waimarino sergeant Russell England said the increased crime rate on Turoa warranted stationing an officer on the field. He said at peak times there were up to 4000 people on the mountain compared with 1500 in Ohakune and that it can take 45 Turn page 2

From page 1 minutes to get to the field from off the mountain. Crimes the officers hope to stifle include theft from cars and from outside cafeterias. The station has an excellent view over the carparks. Also, the police will monitor reckless behaviour on the field and in the queues. Sergeant England said they had received much support from Turoa and other ski businesses for the idea, with Turoa donating a season pass and ski shops donating ski equipment.
