River hut may be removed

The Wanganui River hut that was submerged in the March floods may be removed. Department of Conservation staff are to consult river users about the future of Te Puha Hut, built in 1974 about 3km south of Pipiriki. The hut's floor is rotting because of silt and mud and the hut access, toilet and woodshed were washed away in the floods. The building is also not secure because of slumping. DoC says there have been no hut fees collected from the hut in the past two years and that it is often empty, possibly because of its location. A possible replacement hut site, some time in the future, would be halfway between Pipiriki and Downes hut to encourage use of the lower river.
