June skiing starts well

Ruapehu's snow slopes attracted lots of tobogganers and sightseers as well as about 2000 skiers at Turoa and 600-800 at Whakapapa on the weekend, which was fine on Sunday and cloudy with fine patches on Saturday. Whakapapa's beginner facilities at the Top o' the Bruce were running and Turoa's Alpine Meadow and Wintergarden platters plus the Park Lane and Movenpick Chairlifts operated. The Giant Chairlift was operating for a time on Satuday but suffered a breakdown, with about 25 people having to be evacuated from the lift.
