Big day for Nth Wanganui Rugby Reps
Coach John Transom was taking no chances as he prepared his team last night (Monday) for the opening Bebleington Shield defence of the season. The team plays Rangitikei in Waiouru tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2.45pm. on Patterson Field. He has thirteen current Wanganui players in his squad and three former players. The Bebleington Shield schedule will be played over a month with games against Rangitikei, Central Hawkes Bay, Dannevirke and Bush. Also at stake tomorrow will be the Pownall Trophy which is played for between Rangitikei and North Wanganui. North are the present holders of this trophy. In a game played last Wednesday, Rangitikei just beat Bush by 18-17 so a tough game is expected tomorrow. A good turnout of supporters is hoped for because the games have so far been evenly spread around the sub union with Raetihi and Ohakune already hosting the Grace Cup challenge games. North Wanganui lost this cup to Taupo when their rivals scored a controversial try in the last seconds of the game last month. Ohakune-Karioi, Raetihi and Waiouru players in this side are:
James Renata, Marsh Tangaroa, Kellick Harding, Richard Mathews, Thomas Waara, Pedro VanderEnt, Lochlan Harding, Gerraed Te Heu Heu, Sabu Brown, Steve Cameron, Steve Gordon and Paul Rudolph. The North ern Wanganui Colts will play the Rangitikei Colts in the early game starting at 1.15pm. The Rangitikei Colts will go out as favourites with their 42-0 win over Bush Colts last Wednesday. The local players in the North Wanganui Colts are: J. Puketapu (Waiouru), D. Thompson, P. Coomlies, M. Wills (Ohakune-Karioi) B . B ailey , N. Frederickson, J. Haitana P. Trow (Raetihi), D.
