Ohakune Karioi rugby back in from the cold

Ohakune Karioi played their way into the first division by securing a win over Marist B with 40 points to nil on Saturday

Ohakune were ably led by captain Brian Bailey in securing a feast of possession from scrums and lineouts. A shower of rain ten minutes into the game made the ball slippery and the score could well have been higher, though the snow that had been lying around the day before had vanished. Marist played a sporting type of game playing offside much of the time and perhaps

upsetting any promising back movements. In the Ohakune forwards Brian Bailey, Greg Taylor, and Richard Lindsay all played good games while in the backs Steve Vine and John Kenedy played well. Ohakune are now in the first division and play Marton Old Boys in Ohakune next Saturday, which will be one of the hardest for Ohakune as Marton are the Division One title

holders. Ohakune Karioi's points came from tries by John Kenedy (2), Richard Lindsay, Terrance McLeod, Ray Brown, Steve Cameron, and Lachlan Harding kicked two conversions and four penalties. Ratana downs Raetihi On an extremely muddy field at Ratana Raetihi were comprehensively beaten 41-14 by the home team, on Saturday. Even though the field was a quagmire the game flowed and both teams used their backs at every opportunity. The forward struggle

was extremely even in the set pieces but Ratana mauled magnificiently and sometimes marched Raetihi back 30 or 40 metres at a time. The Ratana props, Doug Fox and Murray Rurinui were to the fore in this type of play. Ratana backs had the better of their counterparts as they ran strongly and used clever switches of play to beat the defense. It took Raetihi until the last 15 minutes to develop defensive ploys to counter this strong running. For the first 10 minutes of the game

Raetihi looked likely to score but wrong decisions at crucial times cost them dearly. For the next 40 minutes the Ratana rank dominated the game but to their credit Raetihi came back strongly over the last 15 minutes and scored 14 points. Marsh Tangaroa had another great game for Raetihi. He was well supported by James Renata and Kerry Brown. Thomas Waara had a good game in the backs. Scorers for Raetihi were: Gerard Te Heu Heu, Thomas Waara and Ivan Hall (tries); Wayne Te Huia (conversion).
