Compulsory cycle helmets at Waiouru

Waiouru Children have taken to wearing cycle safety helmets with a vengeance. The idea of introducing the Protect the

Brains Trust campaign to Waiouru was initially propagated by the Health Watch Committee with the actual organizing and running of the campaign taken up

by the Resource Centre. The Resource Centre's Co-Ordinator, Helen Twist said "We have now just won the battle to make the wearing of cycle helmets compul-

sory for kids at Waiouru Primary School." Parents wanting to buy helmets can obtain $15 discount vouchers at the Resource Centre and then order a helmet from Turner's Bookshop, thus getting a helmet for only $25 with the voucher. "So far we've given

out 300 vouchers for kids from pre-school age right up to form two," said Helen. The Protect the Brains Trust is a national organisation sponsored by Telecom. In December last year, Rebecca Oaten the "Helmet Lady" from Palmerston North gave an educational talk to the children at Waiouru Primary on the reasons and importance of

wearing cycle safety helmets. "We've had a really good response from the kids since then," said Helen. The Resource Centre is raising money to keep the campaign going. They have had a wide variety of donations, including one from the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess of $2000, one from the Desert Fair and $900 from the Oasis Hotel.
