Government rushing tobacco bill
New Zealanders for the Right to Decide spokesperson John Adshead, is staggered at the Government's attitude toward the New Zealand public on the Smoke-Free Bill. He says he is amazed that the Chairperson of the Social Services Select Committee, Mrs Keall, had given only
15 days for New Zealanders to put in submissions to the Select Committee. In view of the fact that the decision was not made public for a week, has virtually limited the time to eight dayis. "This type of behaviour on what I believe to be a major issue is disgraceful," said Adshead. "When one compares it to The Weights and Measures Amendments Bill', that gets eight weeks in the
Select Committee process, Mrs Keall's attitude on this matter showing clearly that she has little regard for the democratic rights of New Zealanders." "Following requests to the Prime Minister, Mrs Keall's committee has refused a request for an extension, " said Adshead. "I find the whole attitude of certain Members of Parliament regarding this Bill quite distasteful," said Adshead.
