Historic church house leaves the district
While the town was keeping an eye on the future of the Ohakune Junction Railway Station another historic building, the 1918 vintage Roman Catholic Presbytery, slipped out of the area last week.
"It's a bloody shame to see it leave the district," said one onlooker as the removal
company, Britton Housemovers, heaved and dragged the two major pieces of the
lovely old house off the section. Many other people echoed those sentiments. ' The house was leaving for Te Horo near Otaki, to a private owner, Mr Phillip Cadeldo. Asked if the building
had been offered for sale locally, a church spokesperson said the local Roman Catholic community would have known it was available, but that it had not been advertised. He said there had been some local interest shown but that it had died away because sites chosen were not suitable. The eventual sale had been arranged privately, said the spokesperson. Asked what the sale price was, another spokesman said he did not want to see the figure published. A Britton's worker said it would cost the new owner about $30,000 to transport the building to Te Horo, complete with resettling on new piles.
