Road Services responds

The Area Passenger Manager for New Zealand Road Services, Paul Tessier, last week contacted the Bulletin with an explanation on why the Waimarino is to lose its service Mr Tessier responded to an article run in last week's edition about the Ohakune to Wanganui passenger service being axed at the end of the month. The link he said, is being axed because of declined usage of the service. On average only five passengers use the service at any one time, while Mr Tessier said 15 passengers on a 45-seater bus is borderline to covering costs.

Mr Tessier said the loss is "unfortunate but necessary", if NZRS is to attempt to make their services more cost-effective. Waimarino people needing to get to Wanganui and return may still take advantage of the composite service through Bulls and Mangaweka that will remain unchanged. Another service between Wanganui and Wellington is to be altered, rather than axed. A 7.15am bus service from Wanganui will leave at 6.15am as from the end of the month. An 8am service between both cities will also be added on.
