ARSON FIRE

Waiouru Police believe a fire that caused extensive damage to Aldo's Restaurant on Sunday morning was deliberately lit. The fire was started in the kitchen sometime before 5am. Proprietor Frank Leow who lives behind the restaurant said he thought he was watching an "early sunrise", then realised it was too low in the sky. He called emergency services by phoning the emergency 111 number, but the operator who took the call neglected to note the town. By the time fire engines arrived on the scene, extensive smoke and heat damage had occured throughout the interior of the restaurant. Those responsible for starting the fire took the cash float from the till and the shop's- stock of cigarettes. Police enquiries are continuing into the matter.
