Army putting camp to contracts
The Army is to consider contract management of many services in its camps throughout the country.
The new scheme called 'facilities management' could see a range of management and maintenance tasks handed over to private contractors. If successful the scheme will release
soldiers to concentrate on military tasks and will also improve efficiency. "The Army will be asking interested parties to register interest in March," said Major McKenzie, the Officer-
in-Charge of the scheme. Contracts could cover a wide range of services including conservancy or ground maintenance, building maintenance, provision of water, sewerage, refuse dis-
posal, accommodation management, courier services, laundry and dry cleaning, fire services, short, medium and long-haul transportation and equipment repairs and servicing. Contracts already ex-
ist in some of these areas. These contracts will run their full term. All registrations of interest will be centrally co-ordinated by the Army's Palmerston North-based Support
Command. However, any contracts eventuating will be regionally implemented by individual camp staffs. Major McKenzie said the scheme represented a departure from the
current methods of operation within New Zealand camps. Subject to final approval by the Chief of General Staff, contracts will be let for an initial period of one to three years.
