WORM DIGGERS KILLING RAETIHI RESERVE
A Raetihi forest reserve is under attack. Raetihi Department of Conservation staff are concgrned that children are digging over the ground in the Alexander Road reserve, looking for worms for eel bait, to such an extent that they are not enabling any plant regeneration to survive or establish. Conservation officer Peter Bourke said DoC has tolerated children digging up the large native worm, sometimes called a "glow worm", but are now waming people that it is an offence to interfere with any native flora or fauna (plants and animals) in a scenic reserve. Mr Bourke said another problem with the reserve is access. He said people using the Alexander Road access must stay close to the fence line near the poplar trees and should not use the private driveway that has been recently built.
