TONGARIRO IN CANADIAN

Two men recently tried an adventure with a difference - they paddled a Canadian canoe down the Tongariro River amid rapids of up to grade three standard (that's lots of white water). Don Baken of Raurimu and Daryl Carpenter from Wellington set off from Waikato Falls, took about four hours with two two-man rafts in support. They fell out twice, were swamped eight times and had one 'float out' (where the stern of the canoe was swamped so low Don the helmsman floated away from the craft!) Despite the canoe suffering some minor damage the pair say they would do it again.
