Raetihi DP retires
Raetihi School is not losing their long time friend Myra Crowley, but they won't be seeing as much of her in future.
Mrs Crowley has retired from the Deputy Principal's position and taken up a part time teaching job at the school. She was honoured a special assembly last Friday, where she was presented with a gift of travel bags by two pupils, Peter Wikohika and Amanda Te Huia who is the daughter of a pupil of Myra's from her earlier days teaching at Raetihi.
Mrs Crowley told the assembly that since starting at Raetihi School in 1961, she has taught 400 to 500 pupils, more than those sitting in the hall on Friday. Asked where she is originally from Myra says 'all over the place'. She said her father was a policeman from "umm... I've spent more time here than anywhere else."
Her teaching career started with eighteen months at Ohakune in 1950-51 after finishing at teachers' college. Mrs Crowley has served in all the senior positions at the school including as deputy principal twice. She has been an active member of the New Zealand Education Institute, having been a local delegate and two years ago was honoured with being made an associate of the Institute. She says the highlight of her time at Raetihi has been "the wonderful support and cooperation from the many teachers who have been at the school and from the community." "Community support for the school is especially strong in Raetihi," said Mrs Crowley. "They always rise to the occasion and support anything you do and turn out for our events." "I have been really,
really, really lucky to be part of Raetihi
School," Mrs Crowley told the assembly.
