Get along to the show
Waimarino's Agricultural and Pastoral Show starts with its main attraction this Saturday - a float parade.
The parade starts from the Raetihi Fire Station at 10.30am, Teaching the show grounds by about 1 1.00am.
Entries are still being accepted for the float parade which carries a first prize of $400. "There are also many smaller prizes to tempt
people to get motivated and create something with a 1990 theme," says A&P association representative Bernice Frost. As for the show itself, children's pets will be judged in front of the grandstand at
12.15pm, this includes all pets except horses and lambs. Pet lambs are to be judged at the sheep pens at about 1 1 .30 am. The Taumarunui Gocart Club will be putting on a demonstration at
12.40pm in the oval, which is expected to be a very exciting spectacle as the cars travel at a surprising speed. "Small boys (and big boys) with a yearning for fast machines must be there to see this," said Mrs Frost. A hangi lunch will be opened at 12.30pm and also at the grounds will be stalls selling all sorts of food as well as all sorts of produce etc. Any group or individual can have a stall, just phone the secretary, 54 691 evenings to book one on Saturday. Some tents are also available. The Waimarino Gun Club will have trap shooting out the back - all are welcome to try blasting at clay-birds. Horse events will be held all day, both days of the show. The champion hack and the champion pony will be judged at about 10.30am and will lead the grand parade at 1 .15pm. Sheep and cattle
classes will be judged on Saturday morning and the stock will be on display all day. For cattle this year there is a new class for hcavyweight bullocks. The lovely old "Scarrow Cup" goes to the person with the most points in the cattle classes. Dropped from the sheep section this year is the stud class with farmers and fat classes left in. All sheep are catered for and farmers are urged to support these events, with several cups to be won in the sheep section. Trade exhibitions and side shows will of course be part of the show and in the produce shed an interesting variety of flowers, vegetables, homecrafts and handcrafts will be on display. Sunday is Waimarino Shears day and FEI horse jumping and show hunters events. The Waimarino Shears Committee has been busy organising
this year's event and with their shearing display stand in front of the grandstand will make for very comfortable viewing for the public. The Ruapehu Lions club is helping with gate duties and will also have their mini motor bikes in action for children's rides. The Show Committee are once again putting a huge effort into organising a Waimarino event that will have something for everyone - all you have to do is get along to the parade and show grounds on State Highway Four and enjoy.
