Non-existent reserves cash

Waimarino Community Board members suffered a rude awakening at their last meeting when they were told the Ohakune Land Subdivision Reserve Contribution account has a balance of $64,800, well-short of

the $110,000 the Waimarino District Council was told was available. The shortfall is partly accounted for by the as yet non-payment of a $45,000 contribution from the Ohakune Mountain Heights sub-

division developers. Council finance director Chris Ryan said it was "very dangerous to spend money you haven't got". Not counting any interest that may be payable, there is $7500

short of the funds necessary for the projects that were approved and no money on hand for the projects that were approved in principle, subject to formal costings. Projects approved were: part cost of the sealing of the Tangiwai Memorial area ($2000); Christie Park toilet block ($26,479 - tenders have been let for this project); Christie Park courts sealing ($16,785); sealing of the Ohakune Swimming Baths parking area ($3,413); Ohakune Carrot entranceway sealing ($21,069); garden boxes for Clyde Street ($2615). Projects approved in principle, adding up to

$72,000 included planting cherry trees, upgrading the Ohakune Baths changing sheds, install fountain and picnic tables at Mangawhero Terrace reserve area, provide roof at the Ohakune Carrot site, upgradQ Jubilee Park play equipment, and assist in funding Rochfort Park rugby grounds lighting and a Lakes Reserve project. Mayor Garrick Workman said councillors need to be kept informed of the state of such funds, that the projects were approved mainly because the money had been left idle for a long time and that he would like to see as many of the projects fulfilled as possible.
