Ruapehu Dux wins Winstone's scholarship
Ruapehu dux for 1989, Naomi Friar is the recipient of this year's Winstone Pulp International Limited Scholarship. The scholarship sees the successful student's study fees and books paid for by the pulp mill company, to a value of $1000 per annum. The mill also offers employment during holidays for the student. Naomi is to study at Massey University for a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in computer studies or chemistry and maths, and a Bachelor of Regional Planning. She has also received a Watties Scholarship for $600 to help pay for her studies. Mill Manager Dave Anderson said while the area of study must be relevant to the mill's operation, there is no obligation on the student's part to take up employment with the company, or on the company's part to offer employment at the end of the studies. Relevant studies could include polytechnic courses as well as university studies and could cover areas such as: chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering; research and development; science; accounting; clerical and secretarial. Although there were only four applicants for the scholarship Mr Anderson said it was a very difficult choice to make. The company had in fact chosen to give two people a scholarship this year, one to a Taihape applicant, but he withdrew his application because it was incompatible with another scholarship he had been granted.
