While visiting the Raetihi library after 12 years I revealed a true 'candid camera' face of amazement, according to librarian Margo Webb. I, like many locals, are simply 'unaware' of what the library has to offer, says Margo.
Margo has worked for the library for 11 years under the control of the Raetihi Borough Council, the Waimarino District Council, and now the Ruapehu District Council. Five years ago the library, located inthe borough council building, was extended and now offers a spacious environment for members to browse. The shelves are well stacked with reading material suitable for all age groups and interests. Large print books are available for those with poor eye sight. The library is free to all ratepayers and county members. A charge of $50 applies to all National library books that are not returned. 1989 figures
showed that within the Raetihi area 296 single adults, 136 children and 70 families registered as members of the Raetihi Library. County member figures showed 117 single adults, 15 children and 42 families. Overall 9586 books and 2391 National library books were stamped in the 1989 year. The library is open to the public for 15 hours a week, Tuesday through till Friday. membership is quick and simple, and offers the chance to review all types of reading material. The library offers an extensive junior section, including a puzzle section which Margo hopes to build up even further. There
is also a request service available at the library for those seeking specific titles and knowledge. Only a small postage fee is required. Margo enjoys her work as librarian. She travels along with Ohakune librarian Colleen Newton to Palmerston North to exchange books. During winter time Margo finds it rewarding to deliver books and reading material to the elderly unable to get out. But Margo's main concem lies in the lack of local support in the town library that can teach so much. She feels afraid of what may happen of the library is not used. The Raetihi Library committee held its first meeting on July, 1924 and was chaired by councillor Harns, Miss Pryor the librarian, was paid two shillings and sixpence (25 cents) while looking after the library Friday afternoons.
