Budget priorities task for WCB
Waimarino Community Board members were told last Thursday night that the district council must budget for a transition period of three months this year, to bring the financial year start date into line with central government. An interim period from 1 April to 30 June must be budgeted for and rated for and because of the short time frame community boards have less than three weeks to prepare a submission for the council on budget priorities for the period. The committee asked for figures on any funds available over and above normal operating experts es so that they could work to a goal. Cr Bill Peach said without such figures the committee would merely be working out Turn page 2

The Committee heard that the council plans to base the rate-take for the period solely. on last year's rates and then live within those means. Financial Director Chris Ryan said the time scale was obviously tight but that it was forced on them by the government. Mayor Workman said the government was so determined to push through the reforms that they ignored such matters. "If you think there was pain before reform, you're kidding," said Mr Ryan. "It's only just started."
