Police racism study stalls
The Police Complaints Authority is still waiting for co-operation from the Wellington Maori Legal Service over the racial harassment claim against Waimarino police officers.
A complaint was laid with the Authority on 10 October last year on behalf of a group of Raetihi people who claimed the police officers were carrying out a systematic policy of harassment against local Maori. Authority deputy Douglas Dillon has said the investigation is going badly and that unless he received further information from the legal service the case may be closed. He said two letters to the service have remained unanswered. The case was delayed due to a court case in-
volving the complainants, which has since been heard. The police investigations into the claim were completed before the court case was heard, said Mr Dillon. He claimed the Authority was finding a number of complaints are made before a court case but, subsequent to the case being heard, are dropped and that the Police Complaints Authority assumed the complaints were sometimes made to support a weak court defence. Mr Dillon said if the file is closed, it can be reopened.
