Summer ski lift trips

Despite bad weather over the early holiday period Ruapehu Alpine Lifts report very good numbers visiting Mt Ruapehu to take advantage of their summer operation. Each year Whakapapa's lifts are operated over the holiday period to give sightseers and trampers easier access to the upper alpine environment. On fine days up to 500 people have visited the mountain, many walking to the Crater from the top of the lifts at the Knoll Cafeteria.

For the first time this year RAL and the Department of Conservation have organised guided walks to the Crater and these have proved extremely popular. While a reasonable level of fitness is required the trip is a leisurely walk with many stops while the guide points out interesting features along the way. Both the chairlift rides and the guided walks will continue until 16 February.
