Water wait

This month is the third anniversary of the start of the discussion on the ultra-violet water treatment system chosen by the now long-gone Ohakune Borough Council. In the Bulletin, 22 December 198.6, it was reported that information on the revolutionary ultra-violet treatment system, which is designed to purify water without adding chemicals such as chlorine, would be made available to the public.

Cr Ben Goddard claimed the system would cost about half that of a chlorination system. The ultra-violet system was chosen early in 1987. Now, three years after the idea was first discussed, the Ruapehu District Council is awaiting the subsidy from the Department of Health (which dictated that Ohakune's water supply had to be treated) before starting to build the system.
