Ruapehu a glider's challenge

By

Donna

McGrath

When the air currents are ripe the Ruapheu Gliding Club gliders can be seen soaring above the Waimarino. The club is based at Ward's airstrip near Raetihi and has been going for more than 30 years with its small membership. Club days are held during the weekends and on public holidays. the club owns two, two-seater gliders and there is also a privately owned glider on site. Microlights and gliders are available for trial flights at $15

per head. The club has three microlight instructors and four gliding instructors available by appointment. Long time supporter and member of 30 years, Ken St John of Makaranui, says he finds the sport very peaceful, and that after a while it becomes a habit. He adds that its quite difficult to get the gliders over Mount Ruapehu, a 15 mile direct route, due to "mother nature". The micro-. lights on the other hand are no problem, he says.
