LAKE ROTOKURA Grade 1 ❖ ^ Situated near Karioi, this beautiful trout laden lake shelters amongst a beech/podocarp forest which is as diverse in birdlife as it is in its botany. The walk takes us right around this pristine lake which usually has excellent reflections of Mt Ruapehu. Bring your swimming gear. MANGATURUTURU HEADWATERS Grade 4 ♦ □ This walk takes us out to the north of Turoa skifield. Huge bluffs, spectacular waterfalls and lush alpine flower beds are trademarks of this walk to the source of the Mangaturuturu Cascades - a natural two-metre high fountain. BIRDLIFE Grade I ❖ Native pigeons (kereru) feed on the fat, juicy Miro berries as the musical mimicry of the Tui rings out through the forest. A casuai two-hour stroll around the Mangawhero Forest walk will introduce us to a variety of forest birds at home in this mighty Rimu forest. FOREST LIFE Grade 1 ❖ The large mosaic of lifeforms needed to make up a mature forest must be seen to be believed. The rich diversity of bird, insect, plant and animal life that makes up Mangawhero Forest can be explored by all in this easy family walk. CRATER LAKE X Grade 5 * □ The Crater Lake is a steaming acid bath surrounded by glacial ice cliffs and the high peaks of Ruapehu. The crater rim is reached after passing beautiful patches of alpine buttercups and daisies en rdute over rock, ice and snow. SOUTH EAST BASIN/BLYTH HUT Grade 3* □ From South East Basin (see above) we descend a beautiful spur with great views to the south. From Blyth Hut, one of the park's nicest, its into the forest and back to the Ohakune Mountain Road. LAKE SURPRISE Grade 3 * □ Passing cascading waterfalls and mountain flowers we descend into the Mangaturuturu valley, following the roundmountain track. After crossing the river, a steady climb over an old lava flow brings us to Lake Surprise, nestled amongst high-altitude mountain beech and tussock. This walk takes us away from tracks to a less visited area of the park. We explore a small volcanic cone and experience the bustle and commotion of gull colony just about as far from the sea as it could be! CRATER LAKE X Grade 5 *Q CRATER LAKE WALKS - DAILV The Dept of Conservation and Whakapapa Skifield have joined forces to run daily guided trips to visit Crater Lake on the magic mountain, Ruapehu! Take the chairlift ride to 2000m altitude, then walk up Restful Ridge to Dome Shelter at 2672m to view Crater Lake and the 4 peaks of Ruapehu. Hear stories of the areas history while you take in the unique vistas of lava, ash, ice and crevasses surrounding the active lake. . We meet again at Mangatepopo road-end. Gloves are essential for protection when descending Ngauruhoe. GEOLOGY FIELD TRIP Grade 2 ❖ □ We visit some of the interesting geological features of the volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park. From Whakapapa Village as far afield as the Mangatepopo road and Pukeonake scoria cone. ALPINE FLOWERS Grade 3 ❖ □ Native orchids, large golden buttercups, edelweiss, and the harebell are some of the flowers to be seen bravely surviving the harsh alpine climate of Tongariro. We visit the alpine herbfields of the Whakapapaiti. PUKEKAIKIORE Grade 4 * □ In Mangatepopo valley we walk on the most recent lava flows of Ngauruhoe and over Pukekaikiore's old volcanic mass, retuming to Mangatepopo road atthe end of the day. OKUPATA CAVES X Grade 2 * □ We drivejnto Tongariro Forest to the cave entrance to explore an underground world of limestone and glowworms.
