Phone (0812) 6090 THE PAGAN ORIGIN OF CHRISTMAS Within the Christian Church no such festival as Christmas was ever heard of until the third century, and it was not until the fourth century that this celebration and its associated customs crept into the Church. 25TH DECEMBER Any good encyclopeadia will reveal that Christ's birth was not on 25th December, but rather this is the date of - birth of the pagan sun god ( Tammuz - also variously worshipped as Mithras, Baal, Horus, Osiris, Sol, etc.). This celebration originated after the Great Flood under the command of Semiramis, Queen of Babylon, Nimrod, the son of Semiramis, was the builder and king of Babylon, the first of the 'deified' mortals. He married Semiramis (his own mother) and made her Queen of Babylon. However, when the godfearing men heard of this abomination, one of them (reportedly Shem, the son of Noah) killed Nimrod and severed his body, . sending portions to the cities of Babylon as a warning against such wickedness. Semiramis, fearful of losing her position as Queen of Babylon, proclaimed herself to be goddess (Queen of Heaven) and renamed her dead husband/son 'Baal', the sun god, demanding that he be worshipped. Thus she sidestepped shame and won the adoration of the idolatrous Babylonians. Semiramis then got herself pregnant, still claiming to be a virgin, and gave birth to a son whom she named 'Tammuz', saying that Nimrod (Baal) had been reincarnated. She ordered that the birthday of Tammuz be celebrated by all and set the date as 25th December on the advice of her astrologers who informed her that the sun would be at its furtherest point from the earth during winter solstice. It was then proclaimed that on the 21st December, the sun (Nimrod/Baal) dies; on the 24th he starts coming to life again, and the 25th is his birthday. THE CHRISTMAS TREE Originally all of this was remembered symbolically ■ using what is now known as the yule-log and the Christmas tree. The yule-log (put in the fire on the eve before the birthday of the sun) was Nimrod - a tree cut down, stripped of its branches and severed into portions, that burned through the night and on the 25th appeared as the evergreen tree - (Tammuz, the reincarnation of Nimrod) laden with ball decorations symbolising the sun and gifts, as it was said he (the sun god) was the bringer of divine gifts to all men. This custom was thoroughly denounced in the Bible by the prophet Jeremiah (Chapter 10: 2-4). JESUS' BIRTH From the Scriptures, we can see that Christ's birth was not in December at all. Luke 1 : 24-28 shows that Mary conceived when Elizabeth was six months pregnant (with John the Baptist). Elizabeth's husband Zacharias was a priest of the course of Abia (Luke 1 :5). There were 24 courses, each working one week at a time beginning and ending on a Sabbath (1 Chron. 24, 2 Chron. 23:8). The course of Abijah was the eighth (1 Chron. 24:10). The first course performed its duties on the first week of the first month of the Hebrew calendar (Abib, also called Nissan). The second course worked the second week, all 24 worked the third week (annual festival of Passover) due to extra load of duties, fourth course worked the fifth week, eighth course worked the ninth week, and all 24 worked the tenth week (annual feast of Pentecost). During that two-week service of the eighth course, Zacharias was visited by the Angel Gabriel (Luke 1 : 8-20). After his service Zacharis went home, Elizabeth conceived (June/July according to our calendar). John would have been born nine months later in March/April, Jesus six months later in September/October - before the first rains came, which accounts for the fact that the shepherds were still in the fields watching the sheep by night (Luke 2:8). The sheep were always brought in from the fields before the end of October. TRUE CELEBRATION The exact date of Christ's birth was not recorded in the Scriptures, nor reffered to by the Apostles and we are nowhere instructed to observe it. Why? Because God intends us to observe Jesus' death by The Lord's Supper (1 Cor. 11: 23-26), remembering His atoning death on Calvary for us. Remembering Jesus' birth does us no good and is not accepted by God, but remembering His death is obedient to His command, and proves our love to Him. JOhn 15:14: "Ye are my friends of ye do what I command you.' The Watchman, Waiouru
