Church needs help
It is a sad fact that the majority of people do not give their church a second thought unless they require it for a wedding, a christening or a funeral. It was the same at the meeting called at the Ohakune St Johns Anglican Church on Wednesday evening. Three parishioners were there and five apologies were received. Unfortunately there is a strong possibility of the church closing unless more interest is shown and $10,000 can be raised for repairs and maintenance. It was decided that the roof may not need replacing but a
new ridge cap is essential as are repairs to two window frames and sills and some weatherboards. Then the building needs repainting. Everyone on the parish roll served by St Johns church, about 40 families, will be approached or phoned in the New Year foi pledges for repairs. Will you phone us and save a little work? We have till the end oi February to pledge the money, or we may find
this fine old church will be shut up. Anglicans, whether you go to church or not, this building belongs to you and the district of Ohakune. The cleaning and ground maintenance roster is working well, thank you, please get behind us for this major job, practical help could reduce the ovprall repair costs too. Did you know that the St Johns Church is listed as a Class Three Historic Building - really too precious to be allowed to fall into decay? Contact George Mur- ; die, Bill Te Karu, Rev. ; Bob Peck or Evelyn ; Copper of you are will- ; ing to* help. Signed by the above
