Ruapehu Mayor: 1990's to start on a high note

It is with a certain pride that I write this 1989 Christmas message as Mayor of the Ruapehu District Council. Little did I realise when I first became involved in Local Govemment what the future would hold not only for me personally but for all who have served either as elected members or as employees of

their respective councils. In my own case, after serving as a Borough Councillor, I have been elected as Mayor of three different Authorities, in the space of six years. Nevertheless ic has been a very interesting, testing and definitely challenging period of my life and I certainly do not envisage any real change during the current three

year term. The 1980's no doubt will be remembered best for the tremendous amount of change that occurred right throughout the country as the Government, it seemed, was hell-bent on restructuring every aspect of life as we know it. Nowhere have the effects of tlps restructuring been more evident

than in Local Government. Nowhere has this caused a greater impact than in the new Ruapehu District. Rather than dwell on whether or not this reform was necessary I will say simply, as a newly formed and elected District Council assisted by our Community Boards, we will

do our best to serve you as efficiently and effectively as we can. Time I know will tell whether or not we have been successful. I firmly believe we can. For the Nation the 1990's begin on a high note with the hosting of the Commonwealth Games and will continue with all the activities planned celebrat-

ing the 150 years since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Let us hope indeed that the 1990's continue on a high with the result of all this restructuring providing some real benefits to us all. And now to Christmas. It will be great to

take a breather and join with family and friends and let the Christmas spirit flow. In closing may I, on behalf of my wife Maureeii and the Workman family, wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.
