Board publication for wool growers
Farmers who want to be on top of the marketing of their woolclip
can now help from new publication from the Wool Board.
To be mailed to all growers, the Board's "Wool Book" shows a grower how to get the correct description for the wool and then how to use the Board's telephone service to find the current price. It also sets out the Board's minimum prices for main types of wool and the sale date for the season. A feature of the Wool Book is the new code of practice for clip preparation, recently agreed between the Board and representatives of the trade. The code concentrates on the manufacturing faults to be removed from full length fleece, shears and lambs according to the general colour of the line. There is also advice on classing fine
wools and grading crossbreds - taking out off-type fleeces that do not match the bulk. Growers are invited to check their woolgrowing performance by recording their stock, acreage, wool weights and other details, then doing the arithmetic to get clean wool produced per sheep stock unit and other telling statistics. The book also describes Board courses and publications for growers. "Our services cover a great deal of ground and this is a general guide and handy reference", says the Board's grower services manager, Mr L K (Lance) Wiggins. "It is intended to produce it annually."
