World heritage park plans

A proposal has been put forward by a Wanganui businessman to establish a Maori World Heritage Park in this region and has been endorsed by the Wanganui City Council and the Whanganui Kaumatua Council. Dr J. R. Moore names the Tongariro, Taranaki and Whanganui National Parks in his submission, as the area for the proposed park.

He says the parks are linked in terms of Maori heritage; history, culture, legend and Maori Taonga, and in bicultural settlement and development since the middle of the 19th century. With the onset of 1990 and emphasis on a unified New Zealand, onus is placed on a "community unity" approach to the proposed Maori World Heritage Park. If implemented, a greater emphasis

would fall on Maraes, historic settlements, art galleries, museums and other places of historical interest, as cultural "satellites" of the three national parks. Dr Moore has asked the Wanganui City Council to forward the submission to Government for consideration. However prior to this, the Council is approaching Local Government authorities in the three regions to gauge the level of support for the proposal.
