Smokefree resource
The National heart Foundation of New Zealand and the Department of Education have developed a teacher resource kit designed to help New Zealand children remain 'Smokefree'. Material currently being distributed is a response to a growing demand for information to combat pressures imposed on young people to take up smoking. over the business, employing his brother Harold as an apprentice. In 1918 James unfortunately became the first victim of the great influenza epidemic, leaving behind a wife and a son. Harold was a minor and took over the business under the guidance of an overseer. He continued the business until 1975 when he was forced to retire to ill health. The shop is now run by his son Allan who completed his saddlery apprenticeship in Hamilton. Allan returned to Raetihi in 1952 with his wife Cath and worked for Wright Stevensons for 23 years. In the interest of the farming community and to enable the continuation of a family business Allan gave up his position at Wright Stevensons and
went into the business now known as "Bowater Saddlery Ltd." With that business came the familiar name Alan is known as today - "Bowy." Allan has found a lot of satisfaction from owning his own business, especially that of such family oommittment. He says he feels a sadness as he speaks of rural communities fading away from small specialised industries like his own. He fears, like many, the result centralisation may have on small businesses like that of the Waimarino. Fighting those fears and for personal reasons alone "Bowy" keeps his doors open and the torn leather patched. As he repairs a pony's saddle he exercises with skill and pride the exact tools and manual machines employed by that of his uncle and father. The evident wear and tear of those tools reflect his story.
