Raetihi council staff debate
Mr Houston has no need to rely on rumour on which to base a decision so important to Raetihi. The plain straight forward facts speak for themselves. The Raetihi Post Office was to close and with it the Postbank Agency. The local community including our District Council representatives recognised immediately the traumatic effect of such a move. The Council members thought that we held a trump card in having Michelle Fredericksen, acknowledged as the most experienced Postal Person in the Waimarino, who was prepared, I think under some pressure, to pass up a position with New Zealand Post at Ohakune in favour of giving to Raetihi the best possible service. It was then hoped and it proved to be the case that Raetihi would be
and is unique amongst postal agencies in providing both Motor Registration and Road User Charges collection facilities. You know why that is Mr Houston and so do the seven Raetihi based Transport Operators out of Waimarino's total of nine. Raetihi used to have one Post Office, one Farmer's store, one Post Bank, one B.N.Z. Branch. Has it become a better town as we have lost these one by one? We have one Chemist, one Veterinarian, one Lawyer, one Bookseller - one of most anything.
Would we be a better town if we were to lose & few more of our one man/woman bands? Mr Houston's letter acknowledges that the Raetihi position is 8090% postal work. The threat is that Michelle's services will be lost to us. What has rumour to do with that? May I suggest that it was just a plain and simple atrociously bad decision that cries out for remedy.

P.S. There are two Registered Motor Vehicle Dealers domiciled in Raetihi Mr Houston.
