Ohakune composer works for 1990
A talented Ohakune song composer finds the inspiration for her work very close to home. Joan Akapita seeks inspiration in God, nature and her "family" - the people of the Maungarongo Marae, and composes songs straight from the heart.
profiie Mrs Akapita said all her songs are "truly inspirational" and she is hard pressed to write a song if uninspired. She refers to her talent as a "family gift", with other members of her family
either competent singers or musicians. Mrs Akapita can be heard chanting a Karanga - a Maori call of welcome - on the 1990's Commission TV ad featuring hundreds of children bearing can-
dles, gathering together to form the Commission's emblem, the Kotuku. Problems arose when she came down with •flu, nonetheless the recording session in Wellington went ahead on schedule. Performing the Karanga was a great honour and challenge
for Mrs Akapita, who says she is "no singer." The Karanga was composed expressly for the 1990's Commission. Mrs Akapita has composed numerous songs for special occasions including Easter Huis and gatherings, and special compositions for the marae's Kohanga Reo.
