DIVERS TO SURVEY TROUT

The trout fishing season is off to a good start with good conditioned fish having been landed from the Manganuioteao, says DoC officer John Heaphy. He said there are no changed to the trout fishing rules this year and anglers can look for ward to a good summer. DoC is to carry out a major fisheries investigation of the Manganuioteao and Mangawhero Rivers this summer, which will involve drift diving to count trout numbers, species ratios, invertebrate sampling and, separately, creel census (where the average catch rate for anglers is worked out). A spawning survey will be carried out next winter. Mr Heaphy said it will be the first such survey in ten years and is designed to map the changes in the fishery. About six divers, volunteers from DoC staff from surrounding areas, will carry out the survey.
