Turoa studies snow making

People want to ski in July, says New Zealand Ski Fields Managing Director Tony Wright, so his company is investigating snow making for its Turoa Skifields. Mr Wright said there are two things required before snowmaking at Turoa is viable. One is more rock grooming and the other is electric power reticulation to the field. Currently the ski field relies on diesel generators for its electricity and on diesel motors to drive its ski lifts. Mr Wright said discussions were taking place with the King

Country Electric Power Board and with Electricorp on the power reticulation of the field. Snow making is already carried out on the field, at the Alpine Meadow ski area at the top of the road, but under investigation is snow making on selected trails to allow a guarantied earlier start to the season on the higher slopes. Mr Wright said water would not be a problem for the scale of operation under study and that small reservoirs would suffice rather than dams. The Alpine Meadow has an underground water reservoir for its snow making operation.
