Chrysanthemum Society, table tennis, badminton. What is the function of a councillor? VINE: To be an active member of a team put in place to manage the needs and , services of the District. To give fully to District and not to favour own ward unfairly. of the council? VINE: To manage everyday needs and services, but also create a plan of future district development - tourism, social services, em-
ployment, urban stability/growth. What is the function of a community board member? HUTCHINSON: To be available & approachable to listen to community concerns. LEOW: To oversee that the community board is performing and exercising its functions and duties required by the Act. of the community board? HUTCHINSON: To relay community concerns to the Ward. LEOW: To continually provide an active input of information for the development of the Waiouru Ward for the benefit of the Ruapehu District. Why do you feel competent to spend other people's money (ie rates)? VINE: As part of a financial team I would strive for essential, wise and best value expenditure. What are the major issues facing the Ruapehu District? VINE: The district must be identified as a large "community" in which the ingredients of a healthy, happy, belonging environment must be developed. What are the major
issues facing your ward? HUTCHINSON: Health, welfare, 'housing, rentals. LEOW: Active promotions of Waiouru to create a positive image, and to ui](ite Waiouru as one community. Where do you think savings will be made as a result of this amalgamation? VINE: At the cost of existing employment, I believe the most significant savings will be made in respect to less, real estate, plant, and administrators. What are your priorities for your ward? VINE: The development of a town plan, for the future - housing, services which at. present don't exist, employment development for youth, etc. HUTCHINSON: All of the above. LEOW: To encourage business opportunities, establish an information centre, and to broaden the liasons belween the Army and the Civilians. for the new district? VINE: To plan an active part in whichever tack or responsibilities I may be given - progressive development of district is essential. HUTCHINSON: No answer given to this question. draw the attention of the Rural Communities and the Business Communities that their goals and commitments are the sale - for a United Ruapehu District. Will you be aiming to look after the interests of just your ward or the whole district? VINE: The whole district is number one priority. The Waiouru Ward must establish its priorities and be prepared to be patient where financial outlay is involved. Do you support development for the region? VINE: Yes, in all fields of endeavour. HUTCHINSON: Yes but not at a cost to the environment. LEOW: Definiately. Meaningful development will encourage visitors to rediscover Waiouru and so shake off the image of just being an 'Army Town'. What about tourism
development? VINE: I am aware of the vast adventure activities now available. I hope the .mountain does not 'dry-up' but yes, I would fully support further development. HUTCHINSON: As above. LEOW: With the right planning we shall enhance the natural resources and develop into the natural playground of New Zealanders and overseas visitors. Are you a conservationist? If so, to what degree? VINE: No, but I would support the protection of national parks. Where district could gain internally I would consider. HUTCHINSON: Yes, I am conscious and aware of the necessity of preserving New Zealand's natural beauty. LEOW: Yes, I believe that the future generations should have the same rights to a healthy environment as
we ourselves enjoy now. What do you see in the future for this new district? VINE: I sincerely hope the new district can pull together and support the Council to give it the chance to gain the best in all fields for Ruapehu District. HUTCHINSON: More enthusiasm & active involvement by the community in issues that concern them.
LEOW: I feel that the new Ruapehu District has enormous potential and with the right planning and commitment will become the exciting playground of the North Island. Which political party (if any) do you support? VINE: I support the man I think will do the better job. HUTCHINSON: N/A to ask this question. LEOW: None.
