Reserves fund expenditure approval

Waimarino District Councillors approved the spending of $43,900 of Ohakune reserves funds and $6300 of Ohakune sale of land funds last week. A number of other costings before projects await detailed approval, which should

be decided at the last meeting of the council, in October, before it goes out of existence. Projects approved were the resealing of the Christie Park netball courts in Goldfinch Street (the cheaper of two options was chosen, costing $16,785), sealing the area in front of the Ohakune swimming baths ($3413), kerb and channeling and sealing at the Ohakune Carrot site ($21,069) and providing g arden boxes for Ohakune footpaths ($2615). From the sale of land fund $6323 is to be spent on sealing and kerb and channeling of the driveway at the Ohakune pensioner flats.

Put on hold pending further information is the sealing work at the entrance to the Ohakune Bowling club and driveway, the building of two public toilets at Christie Park, the Shannon Street project which included a fountain and play area plus plantings and the cherry blossom planting project. There was some dissension over the projects, with Councillor Doug Bennett expressing his fear that the ideas amounted to a "big spend up just because the council is coming to an end". He said the community board members are going to be responsible people and that the new board could deal with

the matters in an orderly manner. Mayor Workman reiterated Cr Bruce Thompson's concern that some of the projects had been under consideration for some time and that it

was "one of those things that drags on and on". "If we delay, it must be for a good reason," said Mayor Workman. "I would hope we can

utilize these funds, not just because the Waimarino District Council is going out of existence but because they are worthy projects."
