1000 TROUT RELEASED

Almost one thousand fingerling trout were released by conscrvation officer John Hcaphy in the Waimarino last week. The fish, from 100 to 150 millimetres long were raised at the Tongariro Trout Hatchcry and were released on behalf of the Waimarino Ward of the Central North Island Wildlife Conservancy council as part of an annual liberation and restocking programme into local fisheries that need boosting. Rotokuru Lakes at Karioi became home to 400 fingerling rainbow trout, Rokes Dam on Lakes Road received 100 (the dam is on private property and permission is required to fish there), and 100 were released into the Tokiahuru Stream at Karioi. Brown trout were also released - 100 at Rokes Dam, 150 into the Tokiahuru Stream and 100 into the Mangateroa dam. A liberation of two-year-old trout for children's fishing at Lakes Reserve will take place in about three weeks.
