Waiouru league tournament

Canterbury retained their national under 17 rugby league title when they beat underdogs Midlands in the final at Waiouru recently. Midlands caused a major upset by beating Wellington in the semifinal. Canterbury beat Auckland to gain the other final berth. Midlands were up 12 nil early in the first half and didn't give Canterbury a chance to use this well drilled forward pack until late in the second half. It wasn't until the final few minutes that Canterbury scored and eventually won 22-16. this was Midland's greatest performance in

this grade with all credit going to Midlands coach Pat Dunn. Auckland beat Wellington 20-10 to gain 3rd place followed by Wellington 4th, Waikato 5th, Bay of Plenty 6th, Manawatu 7 th and Taranaki 8 th. The local Manawatu team was outclassed in most areas of play and was disappointing with their lack of discipline. Overall the tournament was a great success and enjoyed by players and spectators alike.
