Sports trip

A trip away to reward Waiouru' s young children for their efforts on the sportsfleld during the past winter season. This was the idea and with the hard work of Barney Tulisi and the generosity and support from local Waiouru Businesses the trip has now been made possible.

On Friday 29 September two busloads of Waiouru junior rugby and netball players and parents leave for Auckland. While in Auckland they will be staying at the Ruapotaka Marae in Glen Innes. In the Saturday they play a netball game against Orakei Primary School, a 10 a side junior rugby game and a 15 a side senior rugby game against Eastern Suburbs teams. Included in the Waiouru rugby team are six females, three from Waiouru and three from Raetihi. On completion of these games there will be prize giving and a disco for the children. Barney says he decided to organise the trip four months ago as he coaches two Waiouru junior teams and after some research he discovered it has been five years since a Waiouru team has been away on a sports trip. Since then Barney has been extremely busy finding sponsors, arranging the trip and organising fund raising events. The major fund raising event is to be held on.Saturday 23 September at the Waiouru Community Centre. It is a social and the ticket price covers food, refreshments, a live band and door prizes. The children also have been involved in the fundraising be selling raffles and running a working bee at the Oasis Hotel. Barney is grateful for all the help he has received from the community since proposing the idea. A committee was set up to oversee the organisation of the trip, with members Merv Beech (chairman), Nora Tahere (secretary), Morgan Waitoa (treasurer), team manageress Teresa Rai, netball coach Teresa Waitoa. Barney is the rugby team's coach. The entire weekend costs the children's families nothing thanks to the following sponsors: Oasis Hotel, Yege Barn, Cherie's Roadhouse, Waiouru Chemist, Dragon & Phoenix, Aldos, Scotties, Silverfern, Alpine Takeaways, Headquarters

for Hair, BP Garage, Caltex Garage, Shell Garage, Hot Bread Shop, Pepsi Cola, Threads, Turners Bookshop, Pizza Vantasy, Waiouru Motors, Video Vantasy, AGI, and Mrs Love. Barney is so keen the weekend is going to be a success he has already started to plan next year's trip.
