Weeds future

Ruapehu District Transition Committee member Doug Bennett believes noxious weeds control rules need to be general and that control officers should be left to "get on with the job". He made the statement last Friday when, the committee was discussing how the new regional council, which is to take over weeds control, is going to function. Rather than hit farmers with "tickets", officers should play an advisory role, he said. Taumarunui County Council chairman Don Middleton said the regions may carry out limited weeds control work, depending on funding, and leave it up to district councils to carry out any extra work. General Manager Cliff Houston said the

committee necds to be aware of the problem and said there are going to be problcms with apportioning assets and liabilities with regard to regional councils and their duties.
