TV changes
Changes are to be made to the television translator service to Waiouru on 21 September.
The TV1 service will be changed from channel seven to channel 11, and the work is expected to take six hours to complete, during which time the TV1 service will be switched off. This change is required to ease the introduction of TV3 transmissions, due to start in the Manawatu in November. Both TVNZ and TV3 regret any inconvenience to vicwers in the area served by the Waiouru TV translator. The following information is intended to help viewers make changes to their TV receivers to restore rcception capability of the TVNZ service. To install a new antenna to receive channel 1 1 The replacement TV1 service for your area is channel 11, with vertical polarisation, Some older typcs of antenna are not dcsigned to receive this channel properly and will necd to be replaced. Some symptoms of poor antenna performance on channel 11 are: • Loss of definition on the channel 11 service • Loss of colour on the channel 11 service
• Significant increase in ghosting compared with previous picture quality. To replace your antenna you are advised to consult your local television service company for specific advice in an antenna suitable for your location. Saffety precautions • Avoid climbing on a wet roof, a slip could result in a broken limb or worse! • Note the position of power lines and keep well clear. • Arrange for a second person to be nearby on the ground to help if requircd. Changing channel Your replacement TV1 service will be on channel 11. To receive this service you will need to adjust your television receiver/Video Cassette Rccorder to pick up this channel. Rotary tuners Some receivers (normally older sets) have a large knob which clicks between channcls when turned. Simply click the large knob around until you see the replacement TV1 service on your screen. Usually you will addilionally need to ad-
just the "fine tuning". For TVs with rotary tuners this is often a large plastic ring concentric with the channel changing knob, or else a small knob located in the centre of the channel changing knob. To adjust the fine tuning rotate the ring or knob to obtain the sharpest picture possible. Some TV receivers require that the ring of knob is pushed in while it is being turned to engage the fine tuning mechanism. If you are unable to obtain a satisfactory picture you should consult your TV service company. Push button tuners Most modern sets have prcselectcd pushbutton tuning, eithcr by means of a rcmote control unit or akin to the prc-set push buttons on a car radio. Since there are many many varieties of push-button tuning, you are advised to either refer to the opcrating manual which came with your re- . ceiver, or to consult your TV service company for guidance. It is not sufficient to simply select the new channel number on your rcmote control unit. This service must be tuned in first. No visible tuner adjustment Some receivers have a concealed trapdoor
which allows uscr access to tuning controls. Other TV receivers will need to be adjusted by a TV service company as they have no user acccssible controls. Help for viewers Broadcast Communications Ltd enginecring staff will provide telephone advice to viewers on (0650) 48-811 between the hours of 8am to 5pm. Viewers who require physical assistance to regain receptions of TV1 are recommended to consult their local television service company. Compensation Both TVNZ and TV3 advise that no compensation is payable to viewers. All expenses incurred by viewer's consequent to this change are their own responsibility, and this change to your transmission has been authorised by the Broadcasting Tribunal.
